Oily skin can be frustrating to get a handle of. It usually occurs when your skin produces excess sebum, leaving skin looking greasy, shiny and more prone to breakouts. It’s something that’s mostly hereditary, so you have your parents to thank there, but it can also be hormonal or seasonal.
Just like in the case of dry skin, it’s easy to try to address the problem and go the too far the other way eg. let’s dry out that oily skin! But that can cause your skin to overproduce oil and block your pores. Instead, by learning what to look for in your products and looking for balance, you can work with your skin’s natural texture to effectively manage your oily skin.
What ingredients help control oily skin?
Well, it seems obvious, but oil-absorbing ingredients are your best bet. Clay does a good job of this, drawing out impurities and dirt from your skin and helps to mattify. You should look for products that will help clear out your pores effectively and balance sebum production. Blocked pores can result in a build-up of bacteria and will leave you more prone to breakouts. Two great ingredients for this are willow bark and niacinamide. We use these in our Indian Clay Non-Foaming Cleanser and Aloe & Niacinamide Anti-Blemish Clarifying Serum.
What should I avoid?
In the case of oily skin, it’s more a case of not doing too much rather than avoiding anything in particular. That being said, be cautious when using alcohol-based products as they can dry the skin our too much, causing your skin to over-produce natural oils. Follow the directions for use given by your products and remember: keep it simple. We suggest having a range of products that can work in tandem with each other and for your skin. Overcomplicating your skincare routine might be asking too much of your skin and the properties in each might battle against each other counterproductively.
What Botanical Lab products should I use and how often?
Give our Neem Face Wash a go, and use on a daily basis to keep your face feeling fresh and reinvigorated. If you need something that works more regularly, our Indian Clay Non-Foaming Cleanser is good to use twice a day, morning and night, to keep those oils at bay.
