How to get rid of acne

Acne can be super frustrating. It can make you feel self-conscious and at times, it can be hard to put your finger on exactly what caused it. People breakout for many reasons – it could be poor diet, hormone-related or maybe you have naturally-oily skin that causes blocked pores more regularly. That doesn’t mean you have to accept acne as a mainstay though. There’s plenty of great ingredients out there that effectively target spots and help get your skin looking clear again.

What ingredients should I be looking for?

Acne occurs when the oil glands of your skin become clogged with bacteria or dead skin cells, which back up under the skin, producing pimples. So there’s a basic checklist you can tick off to ensure you’re giving your skin the best chance. We want to clean, calm and then protect your skin. So ingredients with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, like niacinamide or turmeric, would be a good place to start.

You should be looking out for ingredients that sink deep into your skin and get to work balancing oiliness. Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) like salicylic acid is great at dealing with oily skin, blocked pores and inflamed acne. It gets to work dissolving sebum and improving the look of pores. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) like mandelic acid also has a great rep for helping regulate sebum and clear away dead skin cells.

What Botanic Lab products should I use?

We started as an anti-blemish brand, so we have plenty of products made to target breakouts and acne-prone skin. Our two hero products in this category are our Turmeric Blemish Control Clay Mask and our Neem Leaf & Clove Anti-Blemish Gel – both aim to reduce bacteria levels that cause breakouts and exfoliate clogging debris for clearer-looking skin. The latter contains salicylic acid, which is oil-soluble, so can get deeper into your skin to help clear clogged pores and dead skin cells.

However, as mentioned before, products like Pumpkin & Papaya Daily Exfoliator are full of AHAs, so they’ll also work to replenish the top layer of skin. We’d recommend using it a few times a week and opt for our Neem Leaf Gentle Face Wash and Neem Leaf Cleanser morning and night.
