Is turmeric good for your skin?

You’ve probably seen pictures of home-made turmeric face masks. Don’t be put off by the vibrant golden colour – though you may recognise it more in the kitchen, it’s one of skincare’s more understated ingredients. There’s good reason turmeric has been used for centuries to treat a range of issues.

Why is it a good ingredient?

Turmeric is full of antioxidants – compounds that help defend against skin damage – and anti-inflammatory elements, which help bring out a healthier glow to your skin. As an anti-inflammatory, in particular, it has all the properties needed to heal parts of your skin that are stressed, wounded or suffering from breakouts. It helps calm the area of skin that’s sore by decreasing inflammation and oxidation, giving it the best chance of healing faster.

How should I use it?

While some see success in making their own turmeric masks at home, the root reacts to people’s skin differently. You’re likely to feel a light tingling sensation either way, and that’s OK. But for some, it will cause irritation. This could be due to an allergic reaction to some of the compounds that make up the spice. So we recommend opting for products which contain turmeric – that way you know it’s tested and trusted and has the right balance of turmeric that’ll do wonders for your skin.

What Botanical Lab products contain turmeric?

We have two products that are perfect for adding into your routine. Our Turmeric Clarifying Face Wash contains turmeric and salicylic acid with a non-SLS surfactant. This gives regular bacteria-bashing freshness that cleanses your pores and leaves you feeling great. Or if you’re after something for a laid-back Sunday ahead of a new week, try our Turmeric Blemish Control Face Mask. It’ll purify, gently exfoliate and battle off blemishes to start your week right.

When should I be careful using turmeric?

We recommend doing patch test with turmeric first, to ensure you don’t see a reaction or too much intense tingling. If you do, we recommend you stop using. Safest bet – go for one of our enriching products that have just the right amount in.
